Ok,this is a slightly old argument/idea but it’s expressed really well in this article form Naomi Wolf.

Oh come ON, I’m not even going to read that. Only the most sensationalist, leftarded idiot could seriously argue that the United states is slipping into a fascist state. George Bush mightn’t be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he is in no way comparable to Mussolini or Hitler.
The Guardian/Observer is well-known for being a bastion of bleeding-heart pinko loons who rail against everything from American attempts to destroy Al-Qaeda to woman who believe in keeping a trim figure (it’s demeaning to women, apparently). Do not trust it anymore than you would trust the Daily/Sunday Telegraph or Fox News.

There is that alright.. The interesting point in the article (which I have major doubts about) is that the current state of affairs (which includes things like the fact that the President can have US citizens declared ‘enemy combatants’ and tossed in jail without trial) is very open to abuse at a future date – the general thrust of the article is one I don’t agree with but the way it goes through some facts does show that a reasonable and important part of America’s ‘checks and balances’ against ‘tyranny’ have been eroded under the Bush Administration which does leave the way open for less scrupulous people to abuse those powers. I mean, other than good luck theres very little to stop another ‘Nixon’ – who used what powers he had then against American citizens, and should someone like him gain the Presidency, with the current powers that the Bush administration have created this ‘hypothetical President’ would have an easy(ier) time abusing their powers…

There’s are far greater impediment than mere good luck preventing a megalomaniac from taking over the White House: democracy. With a lively and critical press corps present, there is little chance that the American public could be duped into voting for a closet Hitler.
I’m not trying to say that erosion of civil liberties is of little or no concern, but rather that a lot of the discussion on this matter amounts to nothing but empty fear-mongering.

on the other hand there is a question about the ‘critical press corps’.. and i don’t necessarily agree with the article in the idea that there could be a ‘Hitler round the corner’ but on the other hand the general society is starting to become more receptive to these abuses (in that they don’t seem to care) especially when you compare it to the reactions that accompanied Vietnam and any other incidents of a comparable nature…
